Hair transplant
in men

Hair transplants or hair implants are aimed at restoring hair loss in men and women. It is very important to make an accurate diagnosis in order to select the best treatment for each patient.

Hair loss has different causes, being androgenetic alopecia the most frequent cause in men due to a combination of genetic, hormonal and age factors, women can also suffer from this condition.

Hair transplantation is the only effective and permanent method to recover hair mass or densify areas that have little volume. Not only can we restore scalp hair, but also mustache, beard, eyebrows and scars in hairy areas.

FUE TECHNIQUE

FOLLICULAR UNIT EXCISION TECHNIQUE OR HAIR BY HAIR TECHNIQUE

What is it?

It is one of the most sought-after techniques worldwide due to its rapid recovery and integration to daily activities and because it does not leave a linear scar in the donor area.

The extraction of follicular units avoids leaving a linear scar in the donor area of the patient. The grafts are extracted one by one from the occipital or posterior region of the scalp, this being the donor area. We use to perform the extractions “punch” of 0.8 – 1 mm, these small circular wounds will gradually heal and at 7 to 10 they are almost undetectable.

It is a technology that needs a medical staff with a lot of skill, experience and dedication.

It is important to note that to perform this technique the entire donor area on the back needs to be shaved, and after 10 to 15 days the hair will grow and cover the entire area. The best candidates for this technique are young men who wear their hair very short, patients with little elasticity in the donor area and those who do not want a linear scar or do not want to undergo another type of procedure.

In patients who wear long hair, the shave can be covered with their own hair and in this way the shaved area is immediately hidden, achieving a quick aesthetic recovery for the purpose of rapid reintegration into the workplace.

This technique allows the correction of scars in the donor area of previous surgery.

We perform virtual evaluations to patients living abroad who send us photographs and a medical history of their hair loss to get an idea of what can be achieved and guide them in this regard but always should be evaluated individually to calculate the average number of follicular units per square centimeter that can be extracted to achieve the desired goals. In many cases it is necessary to perform a 2nd session at 8-10 months to achieve greater density or cover other areas.

WAW Sytem

Extraction of follicular units in the donor area

WAW SySTEM FUE

What is the WAW FUE system?

In our center we use this system for the extraction of follicular units with great results and benefits.

Dr. Jean Devroye created the WAW FUE system by formulating a state-of-the-art hybrid punch, called Hybrid Trumpet.

The WAW FUE system uses a unique shape extraction device that closely mimics the natural shape of follicular units.

tools and devices does the system use

The new commercial model of the WAW FUE system offers wireless control with three basic phases for optimal results.

  • 1

The first adjusts the angle or arc of oscillation.

  • 2

The second adjusts the oscillation speed.

  • 3

    The third adjusts the speed.

These functions allow us to modify the acceleration speed, oscillation mode and angulation, giving you more control over the process and allowing us to use your skills to the fullest.

The WAW FUE system also provides a beneficial score count that can be reset at any time. This means that you, as the patient, can see how many grafts have been harvested. Since the cost of the procedure is directly related to the number of grafts, it is important to have this information.

The Hybrid punch or hybrid trumpet offers the advantage of blunt and sharp punches with a 90-degree outer edge and a smooth, funnel-shaped inner edge. It makes penetration into the skin smoother and less traumatic, functioning as a dissecting tool rather than a cutting tool.

FUSS TECHNIQUE
OR STRIP TECHNIQUE

What is it?

The Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) is a technique that has been performed worldwide for 30 years, Dr. Morales has perfected it, making the scar in the donor area imperceptible, using the Trichophytic technique, which allows the growth of hair in this area. Although this technique is not frequently used, some patients request it because they do not have to shave the donor area.

By using follicular units of 1-2-3 hairs, excellent aesthetic results can be obtained with good density and a natural hairline.

Our Center uses the most modern technology in the dissection of follicular units by stereotactic microscopy, maximizing the donor area.

Preguntas

Frecuentes

What are the key criteria to determine if I am a good candidate for a hair transplant?

Several factors influence the suitability for hair transplantation, such as the degree of alopecia, the density in the donor area, the quality of the hair, the patient’s age and lifestyle. Generally speaking, most men and women with hair loss can be considered good candidates. It is recommended to schedule an evaluation appointment, either in person or virtually. If you reside outside the country, you can also send photos to our email or via WhatsApp for a preliminary evaluation. This process will allow us to more accurately determine if a hair transplant is the right option for you.

Does age affect my eligibility for a hair transplant, and how is this addressed in the evaluation process?

At present, age is not considered a limiting factor for undergoing a hair transplant. What is crucial in the evaluation are elements such as the degree of baldness, family history, response to medical treatments aimed at slowing hair loss, general health and the quality and density of the donor area. For younger patients, we adopt a conservative approach, ensuring a natural result that will last throughout their lives. Determination of suitability is made carefully considering these factors, allowing us to customize treatment for each individual.

What is the best way to take the necessary photos for a virtual evaluation of a possible hair transplant?

It is advisable to take photographs from various positions for a complete evaluation. Front, left and right lateral images, as well as a posterior view. Also, include a shot with the head tilted downward, as exemplified in the images provided. These perspectives will allow evaluation of both the donor area (located at the back of the scalp, where the follicular units will be extracted from) and the recipient area (the region affected by hair loss, where the new hair will be implanted). This set of photos will provide a comprehensive view for an accurate assessment of your situation and treatment options.

How many hair grafts will I need in a transplant and how many sessions will be necessary?

The number of hair grafts needed varies according to the density in square centimeters in the donor area. No fixed number of grafts is established, as each patient and area to be treated is unique.

Depending on the degree of baldness, one or more sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired volume and density. The recommended interval between sessions is 8 to 10 months, allowing the hair from the first transplant to grow and the results to be evaluated before proceeding with additional sessions. It is important to note that in each session we strive to perform the best possible intervention, customizing the treatment plan to ensure optimal and natural results in each case.

What is the recovery time after a hair transplant?

On average, recovery time is 24 to 48 hours, during which the patient can return to work.

When can I resume my physical activities after a hair transplant?

The time to resume physical activities will depend on the transplant technique you choose. With the FUE (single follicular unit extraction) technique, you can start exercising from the fifth day, gradually increasing the intensity. In the case of the FUSS technique (strip extraction), it is recommended to wait at least two weeks before resuming physical activities.

When should I return for a check-up after transplantation?

We perform the first check-up 24 hours after the procedure, during which we instruct the patient on the routine to be followed in the first days. For those patients who reside abroad and undergo the FUE technique, they can travel after 48 hours. If they opt for the FUSS or strip technique, it is recommended to stay in the country for an average of 7-10 days to remove the sutures from the donor area.

Who performs the hair transplant procedure?

In our center, Dr. Mari Carmen Morales performs the procedure, accompanied by a medical team and 5 trained technical assistants. The doctor supervises and directs the entire process, from the dissection of the follicular units to their insertion. This personalized attention guarantees safety and optimal results.

Is hair transplantation effective and are the results permanent?

Yes, hair transplantation is highly effective and offers permanent results. Transplanted hairs are taken from a region of the scalp where the hair follicles do not inherit the sensitivity to hormones that weakens and thins hair over time. Therefore, once transplanted, these hairs will maintain their genetic characteristics, providing long-lasting and natural results.

What is the difference between follicular units and number of hairs?

When we perform a hair transplant we place in each incision a graft or follicular unit, but each follicular unit may contain 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 hairs and this will give 2 values at the end. We will have a number of follicular units and another will be the number of hairs.

How to choose the right hair transplant surgeon?

The ideal physician is a dermatologic surgeon experienced in the most innovative techniques, certified to diagnose and perform the procedure with safety and quality. Dr. Morales is certified by the American Board of Hair Transplantation (ABHRS), with more than 20 years of experience and an active member of the International Society of Hair Transplantation (ISHRS).

Dr. Morales is certified by the American Board of Hair Transplantation (ABHRS) and is an active member of the International Society of Hair Transplantation (ISHRS), a worldwide organization that certifies professional standards, with more than 20 years of experience and thousands of satisfied patients.

What is the cost of a hair transplant?

The cost varies according to the area to be restored, the technique selected and the number of follicular units. Although cost is important, the decision should not be based solely on this factor. The priority is to obtain the best results with a safe procedure, an effective recovery and a personalized treatment. For more information you can call our center. 809-227-1028 ext 103

Is hair transplantation painful?

Most patients experience little or no discomfort. Dr. Morales uses special anesthesia and sedation techniques to ensure patient comfort.

When will you be able to visualize the final result?

Between 7-15 days after the procedure the transplanted hair falls out and enters a resting phase called Telogen phase to restart its normal cycle. From the 4th – 6th month is when they start to grow and little by little they will thicken until the final result is achieved, which in most patients takes 8 – 12 months.

What does the treated and donor area look like after hair transplantation?

The appearance varies according to the technique used. In the FUE technique, the donor area is shaved and shows small holes that camouflage in 5-7 days. With the FUSS technique, the scar is hidden by the hair. Both treated areas show temporary scabs that fall off on the seventh day.

Does smoking and alcohol affect the procedure?

It is recommended not to smoke 7 days before and 10 days after the procedure, and to avoid alcohol 3 days before and 5 days after. Nicotine and alcohol can affect the healing and recovery process.

What is the duration of the procedure?

The duration depends on the technique, the area to be restored and the number of follicular units. With the FUSS technique, the average is 6-8 hours, while with the FUE technique it is 8-9 hours.

What is the success rate?

The survival rate of transplanted follicular units is considered to be 95%.

Is there a possibility of rejection of the transplanted hair?

No, the hair is the patient’s own and there is no possibility of rejection.

Do I need to continue medical treatment to stop the process of alopecia or baldness?

The need for medical treatment after a hair transplant depends on the degree of alopecia and the personalized recommendations of Dr. Mari Carmen Morales. Not all patients require additional treatments. Dr. Morales will evaluate your specific case and recommend the most appropriate approach to optimize results and maintain long-term hair health.

Is it possible to use hair from another person or a family member for the transplant?

No, it is not possible. Hair has a unique genetic code for each individual, and using hair from another person or family member would be rejected by the recipient’s immune system. Therefore, hair transplants are performed exclusively with the patient’s own hair.

Is Platelet Rich Plasma useful after a hair transplant?

Yes, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a procedure that uses platelet rich plasma and tissue growth factors extracted from the patient’s own blood. Scientific studies support its ability to enhance, stimulate and accelerate tissue regeneration. Its capillary application after a hair transplant stimulates vascularization, hyaluronic acid and elastin production, contributing to the recovery process.

It is recommended to start treatment one month after transplantation and to perform a monthly session for three months to obtain optimal benefits.

What are the most frequent complications?

Hair transplantation is a very safe procedure in expert hands.

There are minor complications which, although infrequent, are important to point out:

  • Edema or swelling in the forehead, it is mild and with cold compresses it usually disappears on the 2nd day of its appearance.
  • Numbness sensation in the treated areas, usually lasts between 4 – 8 months.
  • Folliculitis type infections.
